Paris Is A Bitch -- A Rain/Delilah Short Story

Paris Is A Bitch -- A Rain/Delilah Short Story

For most couples, a quiet dinner for two at Auberge de la Reine Blanche on the Ile Saint Louis would be just the thing to smooth out the complications in a romance. But for gorgeous Mossad operative Delilah and trying-to-retire contract killer John Rain, nothing is ever easy, and when Rain sees a crew of hard-looking men setting up outside the restaurant, he realizes someone has been bringing her work home with her. Is it a hit -- or something even worse? When it comes to killing, business and pleasure are the most dangerous mix of all.

This short story is about 8500 words, or a little under 40 pages in paper. The download comes with an essay called Personal Safety Tips from Assassin John Rain, which includes information that will be at least as valuable to civilians as it has been to Rain.

The Hedgpeths - Long Story Time!

The Hedgpeths - Long Story Time!

G and myself happen to enjoy history and architecture. It is not uncommon to spend a Sunday afternoon driving around looking at houses and taking pictures of them. Yesterday we went for a drive in the country and, in our quest to find his uncle’s farm house, he spotted a little cemetery in the middle of a field. I asked him if we could go see it and on our way back from our failed expedition to the farm we took the dirt road and there it was, the Murphy Family Cemetery which sign was dedicated to Kenneth Leon Dickerson whose “love for family was unmeasurably”.

Now, I am quite the coward, but was so drawn to the history behind the little graveyard and I wanted to go inside. I asked him if I could and when he said yes, I grew half a ball and went inside with the camera. Between the fear of invading private property, walking over dead people and G yelling from the car “zooombies… they’re coming to geeeet youuuu”, I didn’t get far taking pictures. I don’t know what Kenneth has to do with the Murphy’s, since there is no “Murphy” in his name, but it was a very endearing, personal, peaceful little spot and the view of the lake behind it was a beautiful surprise and made the place a little bit more special.

I ran to the car like an idiot holding my camera up in the air with the little fear in my gut and when I saw him move the car I just screamed “Don’t you dare!”. Turns out he was just coming closer to the gate to get me. Sometimes I wish there was a way I could see myself from a third person perspective to see how idiotic I truly am.

As I recovered from the bit of rush from the “experience” with G’s giggle in the background, we started talking about families, history, and he said that he should take me to the oldest cemetery in town and this is when for me the trip got even better. We got to this place and, it was a little overwhelming to feel all the history behind it.

You could almost follow the time lines of families, a lot of men that died in war, different wars, WWI, WWII, there were even confederate soldiers. There was one that had an In Memoriam grave, because this First Lieutenant was killed in action and was burried in the U. S. Military Cementery in Belgium. But the ones that got to me the most were the children. There was one family in particular that stayed with me because it made me remember how different life was back then, how rough they had it, and it inevitably made me think about my grandmother. Anyone who knows me well enough knows how much I loved Mama and how grateful I always was and still am for having her as long as I did. Not many live to one hundred years old with the quality of life that she and us were blessed to see her have.

And this is when I bore you even further and talk about this family, the Hedgpeth Family. It’s amazing how much you could learn by looking at their tombstones. And these are the facts I could come up with:

I don’t know when Charles and Josephine were married, but they had their first born, James Frederick Hedgpeth, around Christmas time on 1893 when Charles was 32 and Josephine 29. A year and a half later they welcomed their second child, a girl they named Josephine Isabelle. And this is when what so far seems like a happy normal life takes a turn for the worse. Six months after Josephine was born, they lost their first son Frederick, 16 days shy of his 2nd birthday. And so life continued with just their daughter for some years. A couple of weeks before her 7th birthday, Josephine became a big sister, when her parents welcomed their youngest child, a baby girl that they chose to call Mary Emma. Unfortunately, Mary Emma died just 2 and a half months after and it was just Josephine again. If that was not bad enough, Josephine Isabelle passed away a year later. The longest living offspring of the Hedgpeths, and she only lived to be 8.

So Charles, now 42, and Josephine, not even at 40, had already buried all their three children. To make matters worse on 1907, on her birthday and not even four years after losing their only child left, Josephine lost her husband Charles. He was 45.

In a span of 13 years she had and lost a husband and three children. She obviously had it rough then, but I can only imagine how her life was after that. Josephine passed away on 1944. She lived to be 80 years old. So, yeah, I do wonder what the second half of her life was like.

Maybe most people wouldn’t read as much into this as I do, and frankly, I don’t know if that makes me silly or incredibly boring lol, but I know I liked writing it and giving them a space even if it's on my Flickr.

[verse]
either i'm trippin' off the ecstasy
or i could feel the world turnin'
i'm havin' flashbacks, i can feel the shells burnin'
comin' up, i was taught never back down
that's why i act the way i act now, hold the mac down
32 shots, squeeze til there ain't a shell left
come with my gun smokin', you can smell death
they get the first laugh, i get the last laugh homie
hit the gas on it, pull up and mash on 'em
there's a lot of talk in the streets about me
niggaz know, ain't nothing sweet about me
get back to questions, like "50, who shot ya?...
you think it was preme, freeze or tah, tah?"
nigga, street shit should stay in the street
so, keep it on the low
but everybody who's somebody already know
a few words for any nigga that get hit the fuck up
my advice if you get shot down, is get the fuck up
let's go
Chorus (different variations)
[verse]
maaaaaaaaan
i told niggaz not to fuck with me they still push me
figured they'd get away with it cause tone and poke pussy
i been gone through static, shot at with automatics
since 90, when nas came out with "illmatic"
if suge was home, death row would be good for me
cause tommy matola ain't shootin out in the hood wit me
i've been shot 9 times my nigga that's why i walk funny
hit in the jaw once, why i talk funny
with a ruger on my hip, i walk the street with no care
think my grandma's prayers the only reason i'm here
my wrist icy, keep my ears icy, keep my neck icy
that's why you bitch like me, so i'm a heavyweight
how dare these niggaz take me lightly?
i ain't come to make friends and niggaz aint gotta like me
my own homie said "50, you done lost yo' mind"
cause i shootout in broad day, run and toss my nine
Chorus [different variations]
[verse]
can't find a nigga in the hood, that say "50 ain't hot"
when i drop, i'm sound like eminem and kid rock
play the block, with the watch all rocked the fuck up
jukes me, a week later y'all be shot the fuck up
born a healthy baby, i wasn't always crazy
this aint how moma rasied me, this how the hood made me
the d's call me by my government name
i be dumb and shoot up parks
have niggaz runnin' like "jesus comin'"
there's wet pillows in prison, niggaz cry in the dark
cause if they did in the day, niggaz would question they heart
so when they come home, the come home
walking that tough walk, talking that "rockavalede"
talk'll get you shot in new york - bbbbllllattttt
sex, money, murder, i gotta eat
but i aint tryin do +hard time+ like +pistol p+
see, niggaz uptown understand me in the street
you niggaz uptown'll "stan" me in the street
ha-ha.
