The Doll People

The Doll People

Annabelle Doll is eight years old-she has been for more than a hundred years. Not a lot has happened to her, cooped up in the dollhouse, with the same doll family, day after day, year after year. . . until one day the Funcrafts move in.

Annabelle Doll is 8 years old--and has been for over 100 years. Nothing much has changed in the dollhouse during that time, except for the fact that 45 years ago, Annabelle's Auntie Sarah disappeared from the dollhouse without a trace. After all this time, restless Annabelle is becoming more and more curious about her aunt's fate. And when she discovers Auntie Sarah's old diary, she becomes positively driven. Her cautious family tries to discourage her, but Annabelle won't be stopped, even though she risks Permanent Doll State, in which she could turn into a regular, nonliving doll. And when the "Real Pink Plastic" Funcraft family moves in next door, the Doll family's world is turned upside down--in more ways than one!
Fans of The Borrowers and Stuart Little will love this exciting story of adventure and mystery. The relationship between the two doll families, one antique, one modern, is hilariously, wonderfully drawn. The Funcrafts are reckless and raucous, with fearlessness born of their unbreakable plastic parts. The Doll family is reserved and somewhat prim, even though they occasionally break into '60s tunes like "Respect" in their sing-alongs. Annabelle is a heroine with integrity and gumption. Ann Martin (The Babysitters Club series) and Laura Godwin create a witty, intriguing tale, illustrated with humor and a clever eye for detail by Brian Selznick. (Ages 7 to 11) --Emilie Coulter

Toy Story 3

Toy Story 3

Finally went and saw it, and as pretty much expected, it was brilliant. Mini review time! (I'll try and keep it spoiler-free, even though I'm pretty much the last person to see it.)

- The whole Western opening sequence was stunning.
- It was actually heartbreaking at the beginning of the film when it emerged most of the supporting characters had gone. Where was Lenny? Mr Spell? Etch? Mr Mike? RC? And, saddest of all, Bo Peep? There was a real feeling of hopelessness and emptiness, and the new 17-year-old Andy felt like a different person (for the beginning of the film, at least).
- 17-year-old Andy looks a bit like me. As does Logan Lerman (y'know, Percy Jackson?).
- I had one of those chatter telephones! And one of those farm sounds wheels! ^_^
- Dolly totally needed more lines. I loved her sarcy but likeable attitude. =3
- Mrs Potato Head probably had more lines than Mr Potato Head this time around.
- There's some very funny scenes towards the middle. The people in the cinema laughed out loud several times.
- That monkey was bloody terrifying.
- Bonnie was adorable. I liked it how both her and Lotso had the same brown eyes.
- Big Baby was really creepy for most of the film, up until a point (which I won't spoil) where I just felt really really sorry for him. Can you really feel genuine sympathy for a computer animated baby doll? <=s
- The ending was sad and happy at the same time. My mum and sister both cried (my mum particularly because it made her think about when we leave home). It fitted very nicely though.
- (Possible spoiler!) I sort of wish the toys had made their sentience aware to Andy - if ever there was a kid who would love to know his toys are alive (and make sure they kept it a secret) it was him.

I'd rank this underneath the second one but above the first one - it's a brilliant and very enjoable tribute to the first two films. It still astounds me that Pixar, even now, manage to pack more charm into a single film than all of the Dreamworks film (even Shrek 1 and 2, which are both great films) combined, and arguably any other piece of media.

EDIT: Oh, and the little short film at the beginning, Day and Night, was great, and really demonstrated Pixar's love for retro 2D animation and their ability to breathe new life into it.

Mika: Mama, what is this?
Me: Hm, that?
Mika: Yes, THAT!
Me: It's a lady bug. Well, its a rock I made that looks like one. ^o^
Mika: So it's not alive??
Me: Uh.. no?
Mika: -.-..
Me: I'm sorry, Miks. o.o
Mika: It's unfair, you know. UNJUST! That this poor, poor little baby ladybug has to suffer out in this scary world, all alone. With no one to turn to... but me, being the most responsible girl in this family should get to take him in! ^.^ In fact, he's my new pet. His name is Charles.
Me: ...Eh??
Mika: Wait until I show Kiwa-san!! n__n * runs off *

A few days ago, once I had Mika's obitsu on, I took her out to play! :D She has her new adorable skirt, scarf, shoes, and tank top, which are sooo freaking cute! ;3
